Your application

You have decided to change your job?

Go into yourself and set a strategy before sending random applications. Make the job search your job, the job search is part of your new tasks. The more focussed you are on selling yourself the higher your success will be for your efforts.

Think about what you are aiming for
The more precise you define what you want, the more efficient you can use your time and energy to find a suitable job.

  • job title
  • industry
  • organisation
  • working conditions
  • function/role
  • long-term goals

What can you offer the job market?

  • your training
  • your expertise
  • your practical knowledge and experiences
  • your work experience
  • your personality and soft-skills (which includes e.g. ability to work in a team, social competency, ability to communicate, etc.)
  • your resources (e.g. ability to work under pressure, support through friends and acquaintances, etc.)

Analyse in what environment you would like to work, if your personal strengths fit in with the target work area, but also where your weaknesses lie and how you can compensate for them.

Apply/advertise yourself
The next step is to prepare your application papers based on what you have worked out. This represents the first impression with your future employer. It shows your style and they take it as a first sample of your work, where mistakes or discrepancies should not happen.
How to design your application papers or what it should contain in detail, can be found here.

Show your personal interest: the telephone contact
After sending an application you will find yourself in a period of waiting. Especially with large companies, the selection process can take a bit longer. Therefore, you should wait for a week to ten days before you call. Do not go like a bull at a gate, ask if they received your application, if they have any open questions and when you will hear back from them.

Do not forget:

  • preparation
  • your business card=smile (they can hear it)
  • personal form of address
  • active listening
  • ask questions
  • arrange the next step
